Windows XP taskbar does not show my minimized folders/pages

Please help, i called microsoft and HP and nobody could help me.
yesterday i noticed that when i minimized my explorer page it did not
jump down to the taskbar. it did nothing, just disappeared. The only
way to acces it again was the press alt+tab. i tried to minimize
folders on my pc, my media player (that shows up if i choose to show
media player in the toolbar options) but basically nothing gets
minimized! the toolbar remains blank with just the icons in the tray
next to the clock. but nothing that im currently working with....when i
go to minimize anything it just disappears! why is this happening and
how do i fix it?? please help
