Open windows not on toolbar

Guest

I just installed the XP SP2 update and now the open windows do not show on
the toolbar and when minimized, they disappear. I can reactivate them with
task manager. I tried all taskbar options including closing the Quck launch
toolbar.

I tried the tweak: Programs Aren't Minimized in the Taskbar (Line 240)
at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Tried it but got "Windows Script host" error: Permission denied:'GetObject'

Any help would be appreciated.

Fred,

There seems to be a problem with WMI settings.

Permission denied WMI GetObject - Google Search:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Permission+denied+WMI+GetObject

Alternately, you can use the advice here from David Candy, to fix the Taskbar.
http://groups.google.co.in/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/msg/2c661f9eb1f6a60a?hl=en

Note: You'll lose all the existing Taskbar settings, and the additional toolbars that you may've added earlier.

Did you close explorer.exe before deleting those keys? Otherwise it would be ineffective.

<Q>
Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, Process Tab, end all explorer.exe and iexplore.exe processes
</Q>

Ramesh,
thanks, but this is getting thick.

I followed the leads on the first google search: Open Computer
Management\Services & Applications then right click WMI Control , select
properties. Got: "Failed to connect to <local computer> because 'Win32:
Access is denied" "

In 2nd suggested link: followed instructions
Type regedit in File - Rum
Delete these three keys.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects2
done
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams
done, but neverous: many subkeys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StreamsMRU
does not exist
back in Task Manager choose Shutdown menu - Reboot.

I have to reboot so I will send another message with results shortly

Followup after reboot: nothing worked:
Taskbar still doesnt show open windows and if minimize, lose them
Cant get into WMI control -Win32 access denied

but more info on other problems I have seen since SP2 install which may be
helpful in dagnosis:
Printers dont show in Printers and Faxes (I can print to all the old
printers thru Word, but not other programs. Also Add a Printer will not
function.)
Network connections is blank, but I can connect to internet thru switch
and can view other computer drives but not move files.
Any other ideas suggestions?

thanks Ramesh for your attention.
No luck but maybe a clue.
The 1st suggestion jsifaq.com did not help.
The 2nd provided WMIdiag diagnostic program from MS which I ran giving a
txt log with errors flagged as follows:
2 VMI files missing:
..1141 21:03:01 (1) !! ERROR: The following WMI system file(s) is/are

..1146 21:03:01 (0) ** There are no missing WMI repository files:

I tried to find these files on my wifes computer (XP-SP2) but could not.

Fred,

The two files should be present in the "%windir%\system32\wbem" folder. Otherwise try expanding new copies from the Windows XP CD.

- CmdEvTgProv.dll

Thanks.
Files not on XP CD but found them on internet. Rebooted and no help.

I am desparate to get back to my business and, beside the taskbar problm, i
could not find my printers. I tried "net start spooler" and voila the
printers and they work!
So I can limp along for business ( I was about to dump SP2 for 2nd time).
There is a whole host of things not working right like network connections,
printers, open windows not accessible, etc. So I will persevere.
Opening WMI Control properties: "failed to connect to local computer
because Wine 32 Acess is denied"

Ran WMIdiag again. Seems the only problems are the 0x80070005 - Access is
denied errors. I tried to search MS KB for this and it seems this is somehow
associated with access priveledges, but I am only user and Administrator.

Any diagnostics or further ideas?

thanks again for your patience.
