Windows XP System Tray tool tips hide behind the taskbar (mostly) when you over your mouse over them

Gurus,

Running Windows XP Professional with an NVIDIA video card. I am finally
annoyed enough to post a question concerning something odd. When I hover my
mouse over system tray icons, I can only see the edge of the top of the tool
tip. Most of it (90%) hides behind the taskbar. I have seen this behavior
on many computers laptops and desktops alike, both new and old, but never
have posted a question about it until now. I assuming the answer will be
update the video drivers...but aside from that, anything else I could try?

This bug is common and unfixable, however there is a workaround.

Open the Start Menu and open All Programs. Right-click on any folder and
select Sort by Name. Repeat again. Weird but that works.

Believe me, XP just DOES it.

Quickest fix without reboot is open taskbar properties, UNcheck
everything that's checked, click apply, then REcheck every option you
had. Click okay.
Sometimes you even have to close Taskbar properties after unchecking,
then reopen and recheck.
But that works.
Happens to several XP (Home at least) systems I've ever worked with. I
don't think it's NVIDIA related per se.

A simple "Sort by name" of Programs in the Start menu will accomplish
the same thing.

Actually this is a known bug with XP and nothing to do with your video
card. The only consistent way of fixing this on the fly (without a
reboot) is to refresh explorer (the service that displays the TaskBar).
Open up Task Manager (right click menu from the task bar) - go to the
Processes tab and highlight Explorer in the window (there may be several
if you have file manager windows open - if so close them first) - click
the End Process button [the task bar disappears] - DO NOT CLOSE TASK
MANAGER!!!! - Click File - New Task (Run) meny option from Task Manager
and in the box type "Explorer.exe" (no quotes) and then click Open - All
is back and working just like a reboot.

Yes, I have been told this before - but never works for me (an any of
my machines) - so, sure try sorting first and if that doesn't work, then
go for what I said :)

This is an on-going BUG and never been fixed by Microsoft. However,
someone else has been kind and developed a XP service to fix this.

Have you installed SP3 yet?

After I installed SP3 the problem disappeared.

Bug existed with XP, SP1, SP2 and SP3 (at least on my home PCs and the
PCs at my company.)
