Try running system restore while you're in safe mode and going back to a
time before this problem started showing up.

Hi Galen. I have a similar problem. Today my PC stopped responding,
flashed a blue screen with white text too briefly to read, rebooted and
stopped at the XP logo screen on the next boot. Restarting didn't work,
restarting in Safe Mode got me a black background and an error about not
being able to load EXPLORER.EXE, followed by just a black screen!

I'm not keen on reloading at this point in time... anything I can try?

Boot in Safe Mode > If explorer error come, restart explorer by
Ctrl > ALt> Delete
Process tab
If there is a process named explorer.exe, end it by right click end
process. If not, proceed to next step.
Click File > New > Type explorer

If everything works fine then right click my computer > properties >
Advanced tab > 3rd settings button > Uncheck "Automatic restart" > CLick ok

Now boot in normal mode, you will see an error [the blue screen]. Post
that..

Hi Ayush

No can do, I'm afraid. As I said, in Safe Mode, I get an error loading
EXPLORER.EXE. Pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL does bring up the expected dialogue
box, but clicking Task Manager does nothing. If it brought up Task Manager
I'd be able to try a few things... Can't even get to the Event Viewer to
see if there's anything helpful there!

Where you choose Safe mode, there is a option called "Disable Automatic
restart .... ". You can use that option to view the blue error screen. But
remember that doesn't store that setting. When you restart again you have
to choose "Disable automatic..." again to show the blue screen.

Ayush, I appreciate your trying to help. However, please read my posts
carefully? My machine does not restart automatically - I get stuck at a
black screen with "Safe Mode" in all four corners, no EXPLORER shell
running, and unable to start Task Manager.

It's nearly 1am here, so I'm going to disappear for now. I'll check in
again in about eight hours - hope somebody's got some good stuff for me!

Cheers, all.

You might want to start your own thread. What you MAY need to do is a repair
installation. That's pretty painless MOST of the time.

You might also want this:

(Hopefully you won't - but you might need it.)

Guess what, guys? After a repair installation failed, I formatted the
partition and found that my disc has developed bad sectors... Thanks for
all the advice, anyway.

So why you said that ....

Ok, i think you should try Repair option as Galen said if i am
understanding something wrong...
