By mistake windwos 98 bootable disk is inserted in the CD drive and when the
system started next time, it started with win98 bootdisk and stops at 'Run
with CD support or with out cd support' screen.

I have restarted the system and removed the cd from the drive.

BUT, after restart the system, My OS WINDOWS XP PRO SP2 is not loading.
as soon as the BIOS information screen apears and finishes, my system stops
at black screen with a single cursor blinking at rhe left side of the screen
and never goes to OS.

Please help

What exactly did you do with the Windows 98 Setup CD? The blinking
cursor at the upper left screen is usually a sign that there are no
active partitions on the disk. Boot with the Windows 98 CD and use
FDISK to set an active partition.

Hi John,

It was a personal data cd given from a friend. I was copied the data to my
system and shutdown the system. After some time I have restarted the system
but this CD was there in the drive and started booting with win98 boot up
files. after came to DOS only I came to know that this CD is a win98 bootable
disk. Immediatly I have restarted the PC after removing of CD but my XP pro
was not loded it acts like I have told earlier.

--> as per your instructions I have again started PC with win98 disk and
gone to FDISK but I found my C: is already active. I could not rectify my
problem. Please help me.

Thank you

Do you have more than one hard disk in your computer? Is the boot order
properly set in the BIOS? Do you have a Windows XP CD?

Yes I Have multiple hard disks but order is proper and after this, I have
removed the other hard disk from the system which contains only data. I had 2
dvd drives connected to IDE i even removed one from the system.

The hard disk in the system is primary one and it has the OS in it because I
can access that from XP CD Recovery Console.

I had run chkdsk from recovery console and no use.

I have have a Windows XP pro SP2 CD

Unplug all the USB devices, make sure that you have no flash drives or
external drives plugged in. From the Recovery Console run Fixboot and
then Fixmbr.

I did removed all devices, exept primary harddisk which contains XP and one
DVD drive. and also I did fixboot and fixmbr. even I have removed
connection of Front panel USB connections from the mother board. I can login
to Administrator in Recovery console mode (DOS). Even I did OS repair option
from the XP CD (second Repair option after detecting the already existing OS)
I did chkdsk /r also (there is no chkdsk /f option in recovery console)

I am just assuming that, there might be some thing stored in the BIOS which
may only searching for some win98 information. the information might not be
clearing from the BIOS memory or something similar. (Even I have tried with
clearing the BIOS by jumper setting and also by replacing the CMOS battary,
but it did not helped.)

Only thing I have not checked with is using a emergency disk which I do not
have created and more over I do not have a Floppy disk drive.

If this is an IDE device make sure that the master/slave jumpers and
cables are correctly set. There is no Windows information of any sort
stored in the BIOS, none for any Windows versions, just make sure that
the boot order is properly set in the BIOS.

My Hard disk is a SaTA 250GB. Boot order is correct in BIOS (1st is HDD then
DVD Drive)

I'm out of ideas and suggestions. A flashing cursor at the top left
corner immediately after the BIOS POST screen usually indicates that the
boot process cannot find an active partition to boot to. If you have a
floppy drive you could try creating a Windows XP floppy boot diskette
and see if you can boot the installation with it.

http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/ntboot/
How to create a Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP or Server 2003 boot floppy disk

For the diskette to work it *must* be formatted with a Windows
NT/2000/XP operating system, if you format it with a Windows 9x system
it will not contain an NT boot sector and it will fail to boot the
Windows XP installation.

Connect the hard drive up to another computer. If it will set up as a second
drive, and you can see the contents of the drive, save your important data.

Then put it back into your own computer, run a hard drive test from CD (you
can get hard drive utilities from the website of the drive manufacturer).

If it tests as OK, re-install Windows..

Hi Mr. john, Mr. Mike Hall,

I have solved the problem with my system. I finally got help full one
information to boot the system with floppy and go in in to installed XP from
this link http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/ntboot/

My system worked fine by selecting 1st OS in the selection option but
everytime I have to use the bootable floppy to boot my system. Later I found
a information at Symatec Antivirus that, Problem with my system is a virus at
Bootsector in C:\.

I have scanned the system with full scan option in Symantec Anti Virus and I
found a virus called Eek (b) which is happened by the win98 bootablr disk to
my system.

The details of the virus is available in this link -
http://www.symantec.com/norton/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2000-122109-4824-99

Now system is working fine with all my installed programms, Drivers, and
Personal Data.

I want say Thankyou for your valuable suggessions and your time regading the
same.
