Hi,

I can't launch my windows xp desktop screen anymore as I get an auto adjust
in progress error at startup. I've tried booting from Safe Mode using the F8
advanced startup command at startup as well but it doesn't work as I keeping
getting the auto adjust in progress error message. I can't use the system
restore utility either from the desktop either. Is there anyway I can
resolve this problem? Would it be possible to do a system restore from safe
mode with command prompt. If I booted my PC from my windows XP disc and
chose to carry out a windows repair, would it fix this problem. Please note
this problem occured without interfering with my monitor. It appears to be a
monitor problem but the problem arose withoout ever adjusting the monitor.

I would really appreciate any suggestions from anybody out there as I can't
start or launch my windows xp desktop with this error.

Thanks

Martin

Whenever you ask about an error message, we need to know the complete,
exact wording of the message. Also, you need to tell us what version of
Windows you have, including the service pack number.

Both the above can make the difference between a right answer and a
wrong answer.

Based on the information you supplied, I would guess that your monitor
is making some kind of adjustment. If you have been adjusting your
monitor's settings, put them back to their defaults. If you have
adjusted your video settings (in Windows or in your video card's
driver), put the original settings back.

Changing the Refresh rate in the Display Settings area might've caused
this dilemma.

Though the graphics card could have "bit the dust", I suspect the
monitor. Try a different monitor as a test; borrow one from a friend or
neighbor.

My apologies for my late reply on this issue. This was due to the fact that
I couldn't access the Windows XP newsgroup last week after posting my
question. Anyway, this issue has since been diagnosed as a virus and it
required a clean installation in order to resolve this problem.
Incidentally, 'auto adjust in progress' was the exact error message and the
operating system is Windows XP professional with service pack 2.
