Windows XP SP2 setup error.

I cannot get WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe to install. It stops just after
it has backed up the old files with the error
"unable to read from or write to database". I have tried several times
with the same result each time. I am using Windows XP professional with 500
Mb of memory and 2.4 Gb of free space on drive D:\

I am logged in as administrator, and have stopped Norton Anti-Virus and
Zone alarm. The same file installed on my laptop without problems.
Any advice or ideas?

Hi

Rename or delete the Catroot2 folder and see if that helps
(please post back any result, good or bad).

Take a look here on how to do that:

cryptographic service error and how to fix it

Thanks for the advice, Torgeir. I forgot to mention I have SP1 and all
critical updates installed and Windows XP updates also. I nevertheless found
the article very interesting and joined the group. I did rename the Catroot2
folder to XCatroot2
and now the installation stops wih a "The system cannot find the path
specified" error as it is extracting files so I suppose it is built to go to
that folder.
Does this give you any other ideas?

Hi

Try this:

Create the folder Catroot2 yourself (an empty folder).
Then do a reboot and see if SP2 installs after this.

Also look in the file %windir%\Svcpack.log for any clues...

Thanks again for your attention Torgeir.
I did make an empty Catroot2 folder this time and rebooted.
Running the update resulted in the same message "the system cannot find the
path specified". I replaced it with the original Catroot2 folder and rebooted
and have the same experience so it seems I am going further backward , not
forward!
This is repeatable several times.
I checked svcpack in D:\Windows.000 and found only earlier mentions
of the runs I did when I was warned I did not have suffiecent disk space.
The runs I did after this with suffienct space, resulting in the previously
mentioned "cannot read or write" messages were not there, only an unmarked
one re time which didn't mention anything re that particular failure. This
svcpack is not updated for the last three or four failures, I suppose the
process hadn't proceeded far enough to do that.
The one other point which I did not mention and will now in case it
may be relevant is that when the extraction starts from i386 it always go to
a file on my drive i:\ . I do not see why it would choose it as there is
plenty of space on D:\.
i:\ is on a separate harddrive and seperate harddrive controller form d:\

Hi

Microsoft updates always selects the local drive with most free space
to unpack it temporary installations files to.

Did you find any more details in %windir%\Svcpack.log about the
install failure?

Thanks for the advice re why drive i:\ was selected in my case.

Re svcpack.log it still doesn't update anymore as I said here.

"I checked svcpack in D:\Windows.000 and found only earlier mentions

This still occured when I tried again this morning.

I can only think some file was "hit" or disturbed by accident when I renamed
Catroot2 earlier so I propose to restore my full backup from a week ago and
proceed from there.

thanks and regards.

I have now restored my system from a backup of a week ago.
The SP2 update still fails in the same way as it used to, "unable to read
from or write to the database" but now the Svcpack.log is written from this
latest attempt.

I could try with an empty Catroot2 folder again if you think it's the way to
go.
I append here the last section of Svcpack.log just before the failure.

622.004: Skip Oem Device USB\VID_046D&PID_08B2\6&8D56219&0&2
622.084: Policy restored to 1
623.246: UpdateMonitoredList Succeeded
632.279: System Restore Point set.
632.439: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS.000\System32\spmsg.dll
632.780: PFE2: Per File Exceptions will not be used.
634.302: SceConfigreSystem failed, return 0x14
634.302: DoInstallation:SecurityConfigSystemCommit Failed: 0x800710d9
641.913: UnRegisterSpuninstForRecovery, failed to delete SpRecoverCmdLine
value, error 0x2
641.913: DoInstallation: Failed to unregistering spuninst.exe for recovery.
641.913: Unable to read from or write to the database.

Perhaps 0x800710d9 is an error message for a certain type of failure?
I could include the entire log if you think it useful?

Mike Fisher
