Windows XP SP2 problems

I'm trying to install SP2 on my system. I've tried it through Microsoft
Update on the web, through the Windows Update application, and through
downloading it directly. Every time I try to install it, I recieve a
"insufficient hard drive space" error. I have 15.5 GB free hard drive space!
How do I work around this bug in your software?

To update, when I try to install SP2, it claims I need another 4 mb hard
drive space. I freed up an additional 600 mb space, and yet somehow I still
need another 4 mb hard drive space.

First - this is a peer-to-peer newsgroup. You are speaking with people who
no more represent Microsoft than you do, obviously.

Secondly - I believe you have left out a *lot* of pertinent information.

- Will you quote the message you receive verbatim?

- Why are you attempting to install Service Pack 2 when it has been so long
since SP3 has been released? Is this a clean install from an RTM
installation media and you are just trying to install SP2 so you can then
install SP3? Or was it a typo (twice)? Or is there some reason you need to
test with SP2 and/or some strange/bizarre software that you have that will
not work (supposedly) with Windows XP SP3?

- You would not happen to be installing this on a Macintosh, would you?
Boot Camp perchance? If so - have you not updated your version of Boot
Camp? Microsoft is not the only operating system manufacturer nor software
vendor that updates their software when required to do so. ;-) Although it
mainly concerns itself with SP3 - it still could be your issue.

- Do you have any beta versions of service packs installed on WIndows XP
now? What specific version (edition and version number) do you have
installed as of now?

Please provide Operating system (edition and service pack level,
the more detail, the better.):

Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name) while the line starting with the word "version" will
give you the rest of the story. Post _both_ in response to this message
verbatim. ;-)

- How much total free space do you have on the partition where Windows XP is
installed (the system partition, usually C)?
(Yes - I read the 15.5GB free - but I have no way of knowing your current
partitioning scheme.)
