Error while installing Windows XP Service Pack 1 and/or 2

I've recently installed Windows XP to a clean hard drive, but when I
try to install either of the service packs for it I recieve the
following error message:

"There is not enough disk space on C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
to install Service Pack 2 (or 1). Setup requires a minimum of 1
additional megabytes of free space or if you also want to archive the
files for uninstallation, Setup requires 1 additional megabytes of
free space. Free additationl space and try again."

My hard drive is a 300 GB sata with two partitions, C drive with 10
GB, and D drive with 270 GB, both formated NTFS file system. Drive C
has a bout 7 GB free and D has 255 GB free. I believe the SP itself
requires about 1.5 GB of space so that shouldn't really be an issue. I
have no idea where to go with this so if any can offer some assistance
it would be greatly appreciated.

Other than this issue my computer seems to be running fine.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Although 10 gigs should be enough to install XP...
it's going to be too small before you know it...
so before you get too far along I'd start over and allocate a lot more space
on your C: drive

I suggest you increase the space for the C drive to 20GB. Create an
installation CD that has SP2 integrated on it (slipstreaming) and redo the
installation with that. Autostreamer makes the slipstreaming process
easier.

Thanks for the suggestions. Although I've got to ask is there a way to
change partition size without reformating?

Hi,

I had the same issue but mine might be different. The reason I had
out of space even if I did have sufficient space on my hard drive was
that I was trying to upgrade a DELL OEM Windows XP Service Pack 1 on
my MacBook Pro using Bootcamp. Everytime I tried to upgrade my
Windows XP Service Pack 1 with a Service Pack 2, I always get a out of
space condition. I recently resolved this by buying a brand new SP2
for Windows XP Home Edition. You can actually get it on eBay for
about 100 bucks and you need to get the full install (not the
upgrade). I recently ordered and received my Windows XP SP2 and
installed on my MacBook Pro and it worked like a charm. I think using
my DELL OEM Windows SP1 will not work. You have to order a brand new
operating software in order for it to work.

Yes with 3rd party tools. BootIt NG from Terabyte Unlimited has a 30 day
full featured free trial version. There is also Acronis Disk Director Suite
10 which works well in XP or Vista, and Symantec's Partition Magic, only XP
compatible at this point.

Though these tools can do the partitioning work non destructively, you
should still make sure there is a full backup. The worst always seems to
happen when you're not ready for it.

By the way for this type of backup I like to use Acronis True Image Home
version 10 to image the drive to an external hard drive. It can image on a
partition or drive basis, images can be full, incremental or differential,
restores can be done on a file, partition or drive basis, and it also does
file backup and disk cloning. It's an excellent tool. I never make any
changes to a system without having a current image.

I'm not sure what the problem was on your system, but you can apply SP2 to
an installation of an OEM version of XP at SP1. OEM has nothing to do with
it.

I was talking with a friend of mine about this and he said he had the
same problem when he partitioned his single hard drive into two
partitions. For what ever reason setting it up this way messed things
up for him. Reformating and starting over from scratch with just a
single partition made things work fine though. It's possible they were
unrelated but can the multiple partitions cause problems ever?
