Windows XP SP2 Issues

I downloaded the SP2 and wish I never had! I will not get into -all- the
errors I've received but there is one that I -did- want to correct... Keep in
mind I have already uninstalled the SP2 and the problem still persists.

I can no longer use my CD-R drive. I can not play CD's nor can I create
CD's. Whenever I put a CD in the drive, it makes this loud continious humming
noise that sounds like the computer is about to self-destruct. I had tried to
talk to Windows support before and they suggested the following (since
uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers didn't work)

Step 1: Modify the Registry

a. Click Start->Run, type in "regedit" (without quotation marks) and
click OK.

b. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Highlight this key, on the right pane, and then check if the
Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values are present. If so, please right click
on
the values and select Delete to remove them.

However, the "Upperfilters" is not preset so I was told to reinstall Windows
using a Recovery CD. The thing is, how can I use a Recovery CD on a CD-drive
that doesn't work to begin with? Is there another solution out there?

Have you verified that the drive does in fact still work?
That sound could indicate drive failure and then has nothing to do with
Windows.
Try a different drive.
