DVD-RW MISSING FROM 'My Computer' & 'Device Manager'...???

O

orion12

On my Dell Inspiron E1505/6400 notebook: (Quite possibly, after XP's
'automatic SP3 Update')...My DVD-RW drive has virtually' disappeared (both
from 'My Computer - NO DRIVE LETTER DESIGNATION IS PRESENT - and NO REFERENCE
TO ANY OPTICAL DRIVES IN THE DEVICE MANAGER)...
Yes, the drive IS 'physically' still in my computer'...but it's 'gone' for
all other purposes...And I 'really need some help' here on this one!..
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Trying to resolve this issue I found and tried the following (without
success)...I also downloaded the auto-fix-it file from MS and it came back
with an error stating the drive wasn't present...basically the same as when I
attempted to reinstall the driver...
--------------------------------------------
1. Click "Start", in the Start Search box type "regedit" and press Enter.
2. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. Right click on "Class", click "Export"; please name the file as
"RegBackup" (without quotation marks) and then save it to the C:\ drive as a
backup.
Note: In case we need to undo the modification, we can double click this
RegBackup.reg file to restore the registry key.
4. Highlight this key, on the right pane, check if the "Upperfilters" and
"Lowerfilters" values are present. If so, please right click on the values
and select "Delete" to remove them.
After deleting filter drivers, please reload the drivers.
Reinstall driver
=====================
1. Click "Start", in the Start Search box type "devmgmt.msc" and press
"Enter".
2. Expand "DVD/CDROM Drives".
3. Right click the listed DVD/CD-ROM, and click "Uninstall". Please
uninstall all devices.
4. Restart the computer.
The drivers will be loaded automatically.

At pc shutdown (power unplugged),move the device to another IDE
connection (set jumper pins if needed),restart pc,xp will reinstall on start-
up.

If you ran devmgmt.msc as mentioned, which is Device Manager, and you
uninstalled the cd/dvd device(s) that were present, did Windows
redetect/reinstall the device(s) upon reboot?
Is the drive detected by the BIOS? If not your drive and/or data cable may
have gone South. Do you have access to another machine you can test the drive
in to rule out if it is bad or not?

SAME exact issue happened to my brand new Acer. Acer Support sent me a new
DVD drive and Acer tech visited my home. I was told SP3 corrupted my driver
and to contact Microsoft since this is NOT a hardware issue.

Need help, as I am not really good at making major changes to operating
system stuff. I only know what I know and Acer has left me high and dry.

In my issue, the DVD drive was replaced last Friday 10/2/08 by Acer with a
brand new one. XP still does not display the drive. Driver was deleted and
reinstalled, still DVD drive is vanished. Uninstalled SP3, deleted driver
and reinstalled and still DVD drive is not recognized.

Need help.
