Hello :)

I'm currently experiencing a problem with the automatic updater for Windows
XP Service Pack 2. The updater hangs at the "Initializing Installation"
stage. I haven't experienced problems downloading updates. There weren't any
problems with the Automatic Updater prior to the update to Windows XP Service
Pack 2. I cannot recall exactly when the problem was experienced after the
Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation. The computer is virus, adware,
spyware and malware free; protected by fully updated Norton Internet Security
2005 and Lavasoft Ad-Aware Special Edition Professional. The registry has
been cleaned by currently fully updated Registry Mechanic. My computer has
been error scanned with Windows' error checking utility. I have restarted the
computer multiple times and ran Automatic Updates to no avail.

Please excuse If my question was posted in the wrong forum; this is my first
time at the support site. our assistance is highly appreciated; thankyou for
your time.

Additional Information:

Clicking on the cancel button when the Automatic Updater is stuck at the
"Initializing Installation" stage results in the usual "Cancelling Updates"
message below the "Initializing Installation" message. However, it simply
doesn't cancel.

I believe there is a problem on my computer associated with creating System
Restores. When commanding "Registry Mechanic" to defragment the registry, It
is necessary to skip the option to create a System Restore Point, which
otherwise results in the program hanging.

I don't know if the below problems have any relevance with the above problem:

Visual Studio Academic Professional 2003 always hangs when "building" my
projects.

I run the Visual Studio Maintenance utility to Repair/Reinstall Visual
Studio and its pre-requisites. The pre-requisites repair/reinstall without
any issues. Visual Studio's Maintenance utility hangs when I command it to
repair/reinstall Visual Studio Academic Professional 2003. The progress bar
is three quarters of the way, hanging at "Generating Setup Script"
