Windows XP SP1 is imcompatible with this version of Windows

I get the above error message when trying to install SP1
or SP1a on my Windows XP Home system - preinstalled on a
Sony Vaio. Bought the day XP Home was rolled out (October
2001). This is not a beta install or upgrade. Microsoft
referred me to Sony support for OEM XP installations. We
disabled virus protection, disabled most start-ups, pop-
up-blocker, etc. Nothing worked. Now Sony support
recommends to back-up everything, use the Sony restore
disks to create a clean system & then try the SP1 update.

I'm not convinced. I recall there was a restriction that
SP1 would not work on pre-production, beta XP systems.
I'm trying to find the Kbase article that would list any
license number restrictions for SP1(a).

Note: Windows Update worked fine for all other fixes I've
installed in the past.

Microsoft Windows Update Support is free over the web.

Open up a Windows Update Page
Click Help and Support on the left side.

Click Request Technical Support as the third bulleted item.

Go Nuts and install the support tool and log on with Passport.
