I'm unablei install the SP2 service pack on a used PC I bought about a year
ago. I have not had any trouble with previous updates, but I'm getting a set
up error message:

"The product key used to install Microsoft Windows may not be valid"

what does this mean exactly and how do I resolve the problem?

thanks

It means that the person you bought it from has sold you a pup, with a
pirated version of Windows on it. With the installation of SP2
Microsoft has become more aggressive in detecting these. There is a
place on the MS site where you could check this;
