I'm not sure if I'm in the right section of the board but never mind :S

I've been having some problems with my computer (Windows XP Home Edition)
for ages and my patients has just worn to thin I'm afraid!
My computer has been running slow for a while and I just can't understand
why. It takes about 5-10 mins to start up, and programmes constantly freeze
my computer finds it impossible to multi task. I check for viruses and
spywear once a week using Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot - Search & Destroy and
Norton Internet Security I also Defragment, use "Error-checking", delete all
Temp. Internet Files and unwanted files and programmes every fortnight.
I was recommended to download RegSupreme from
http://www.macecraft.com/downloads/ but that hasn't made the slightest bit of
difference. Someone mentioned it could quite possibly the battery connected
to my motherboard??

Computer Information:-

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
AOL Dial-Up 56k
Hewlett-Packard
Pavilion
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+
2.08 HGz, 256 MB of RAM

Help needed, thanks! x

The most common causes of increasingly slow performance include (in no
particular order)

1. Viruses and spyware.
2. Too many programs starting with Windows.
3. Hardware insufficient for the tasks performed.
4. Lack of maintenance or incorrect maintenance.

Without saying anything more specific than 'my computer runs slowly' any
further advice you will get will be educated (hopefully) guessing.

To aid in diagnosing 1. above, work with Task Manager on top of all other
windows and watch the Processes tab to see which processes are occupying
most of your CPU time.

To aid in diagnosing 2. above, see the Startup tab of the System
Configuration Utility (Start > Run > type: msconfig > OK).

Another 256 of memory would help. 512 is the least I would recommend with
XP. I don't think it would be the battery but is the clock keeping the
correct time? Also what all do you have starting-up when the computer
starts? This needs to be as few programs as possible, the more programs at
startup the longer the boot time. Have you thought about a clean install? A
big step but that would clean out all the junk. Just a few things for you
the think about.
