Windows XP very sluggish

My system with Windows XP SP2 has started running very slow, programmes
hanging, slow to start and end Windows sessions. NIS2006 says no viruses/
spyware. Occasional "virtual memory" error message. Recently downloaded
Explorer 7 maybe relevant, any ideas?

How much RAM do you have?

Maincat: I have 512MB memory. After a very long wait to log into my user I
just noted 1.25 GB of page file use in Task Manager and this is before
running anything. Virtual memory is set at about 800-1500MB so that would
explain the slowness but I don't know what is using the memory.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You may find it helpful to know exactly how much of your pagefile is
being used. Use page file monitor to observe what is the peak usage.
Start it to run immediately after start-up and look at the log at the
end of the session. The log is Pagefile log.txt. If you right click on
the file in Windows Explorer and select Send to, Desktop (Create
Shortcut). The same applies to XP_PageFileMon.exe.

A small utility to monitor pagefile usage:

Note programs using undo features particularly those associated with
graphics and photo editing require large amounts of memory so if you
use this type of programme check these first observing how the page
usage increases when they start and whether the usage decreases when
you close the programme.

Hope this helps.

Will Denny: (and any interested others) that Slowcom page is very useful. I
downloaded Spybot, and it found and fixed 67 "problems". Now Page File usage
which was ranging from 800MB to 1.4GB on logging into Windows is down to 330
MB so I think I'm sorted.
Cheers
