Very Slow Running Computer

I am trying to speed up my mother-in-laws computer it is running extremely
slow. Her system has plenty of memory and usually since she doesn’t use it
for much (correspondence, pictures internet) normally it’s faster than mine.

Her Windows system is Window XP
I have empty deleted items folders and Recycle Bins
I have run a Symantec Antivirus and a Spy Sweeper by Webroot
I have run a Disk Cleanup, deleted the Temporary Internet Files and deleted
Cookies
I have run a Disk Defragmenter

The only thing I have not tried is to do a Registry cleaning mainly because
I have no idea how to do it.

Her system runs extremely slow on startup and when using the internet it
takes forever to do any searches. I was getting so mad that I finally gave
up, came home and posted this message. Could someone please help me?

How long has it been since the slowdown started? What did she do or
change just before then? Is the issue described here perhaps the
problem?

Thank you for being willing to help me. The slow down started about two
months ago but it was gradual from what I understand. According to her when
she updated her Microsoft system with the updates that are sent that was when
the system became a snail. She says she thought she did the updates
correctly but that’s when she really noticed the system running slow.
