Computer running unusually slow

My computer is running much slower than normal. I have
DSL for my internet connect and even there my system is
running unusually slow. I am currently using Windows XP
and I have tried the following things to remedy the
situation:

Removed any unused or old software
Run SpyBot to remove spying and advertising software
Run Norton Antivirus
System Tools - Disk Clean Up
System Tools - Analyze and Defragment C drive
(the analyze report stated that I had 43% free space)

Even after doing all that my computer is still running
extremely slow. Could someone please help me with this
problem?

Thank you,
Lee Brown

Try Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager / IDE Controller
/ Primary IDE Channel / Properties / Advanced Settings (easy to find
eh) and look at "Current Transfer Mode".

What sometimes happens in XP is that if it decides its had one too man
io transfer errors it decides on your bahalf that this disc is not u
to using DMA and turns DMA off. In this case this box will say "PIO
instead of "Ultra DMA Mode 5" which is what you should have.

If it says "PIO" then you have to take a deep breath, UNINSTALL the ID
channel - then reboot, whereupon Windows will detect a "new" drive
reinstall the drivers, resetting the io error count, and allowing yo
back in to DMA.

Of course, it could be a completely different problem..
