Computer running very slow!

I dont know why my new computer is running so slow. I just go a new HP
Pavilion dv 8000 laptop. Ive dl'd a few anti spy ware programs and i have
nortan on my comp. It says i dont have a virus. Ive defraged. I have
windows XP with a turion 64 prosessior. 1gb ram. so i mean it should be
fast. im just kind of stuck, and i dont know what to try next besides
reformat. But ive already done that once and i want to figure out the
problem is. Any sugestion will help!

Top 4 reasons for slow performance:

1 - Viruses and other forms of malware
2 - Too many programs running in the background
3 - User error
4 - Hardware not up to the task, e.g. insufficient RAM

i dont think there to many programs running in the backround. and i think
there should be enough ram. What type of user errors could make it slow down
to where it doesnt play music or anything without freezing? and ill try a
different virus scanner.

You haven't told us anything about what might have caused your problem,
other than "my new computer is running so slow". I gave you the best
generic answer I could.

being a new computer,my suggestion is that you call that nice phonebank of
tech support in India or Phillipines that HP uses and get some help. It
could be hardware. I am sure you still have support for at least 90 days.
