I dont know why my new computer is running so slow. I just go a new HP
Pavilion dv 8000 laptop. a few days ago it was running fine. It used to
play music and be able to type things with out freezing periodicly. Ive dl'd
a few anti spy ware programs and i have nortan on my comp. It says i dont
have a virus. Ive defraged. the compter did this a couple of weeks ago. so
i reformated and it ran fine. Now its slowed down again and i dont want to
reformat! I have
windows XP with a turion 64 prosessior. 1gb ram. so i mean it should be
fast. im just kind of stuck, and i dont know what to try next besides
reformat. But ive already done that once and i want to figure out the
problem is. Any sugestion will help!

Hi Randy,

It would be hard to answer your question without knowing what
software you run and what processes are running when your computer
slows down.

The first thing I would do is download Process Explorer to monitor
what is eating up your cpu time. Second, I would check to see if any
of the programs I am using have memory leaks. My browser of choice
is FireFox, and the size of the process and cpu time increase as the
day wears on. When I start to notice a lag, I close FireFox go into
Task Manager and end the FireFox process (for some odd reason the
process does not shut down when you exit FireFox) then restart
FireFox I notice an increase in performance right away.

For the record, I also have a HP dv8000, and I normally have 76
processes running all the time including listening to music off the
hard disk (DISK:1) or streaming from XMRadio.

Hope this helps you sort out your performance problem.

Ok using the process explorer it says that hardware interrupts is using a
lot. I dont know what that is but thats probably what's slowing my computer
down. how do i fix this?

It would be great if you can specify what you mean by slow. Is it slow at
opening programs or playing games. Is it slow at startup?

From what I can gather here, you might have too many programs installed at
startup which could be slowing things down a bit. As any running program uses
some process time and ram.
