when my computer is turned on i get the message: windows
did not styart etc, i have the options of safe mode, safe
mode withnetworking, safe mode with comand prompt, last
known etc, start normally.
none of these work it will go to the windows xp screen
then after 3 seconds shuts down and returns to the first
screen for safe mode.
i have tried using F8 for more options but they do the
same.
i have tried to repair using the microsoft recovery disc
but do not get the repair option it will only re-install
windows completely re-formatting hard drive, which i do
not want as there are data files which i need to get of
the hard drive.
could anyone please help get me out of this ground hog day
situation.
if so reply to (wheelerlaptop2@(remove this part)

When I installed another CD-Rom drive, like an older DVD
drive from another computer that used win98 or win2k, XP
did the same thing, & eventually the "blue screen of
death" with errors loading modules. Safe mode would only
load the basic CD-Rom drivers for support, so I put back
the original CD-Rom drive & winXP came back ok. However,
I did run anti-virus/Norton & Ad-aware, just as precaution
& found some Trojan Horse type viral programs I had
gotten from being on the Internet, but no viruses. Make
sure that you didn't load any hardware or software before
any of this happened, that would corrupt or sabotage XP
because of compatibility issues, even games that are new
that you just loaded. Some Internet Pop-ups can fool you
into downloading programs that sound beneficial, that act
as Trojan Horses, that unleash maliscious code to open a
back door to download programs without your knowledge.
This is why Adaware or Spybot are good for cleaning out
systems that go on the Internet, picking up Malware that
cripples or slows down a PC.
