windows xp repair fail

During running the xp repair program (from OEM XP version)
I get an error...

error:
sxs.dll syntax error in manifest or policy file
"d:\i386\asms\7000\msft\windows\mscrt\mswincrt.man" on
line 4

error:
installation failed d:\i386\asms error message
the request could not be performed because of an I/O
device error

It then restarts again with the same error.

I cant use safe mode or command prompt etc. (it just keeps
trying to finish the repair, but cant!).

I have tried using another xp cd...but no success!
Is there a way I can get all my files (which I havent
backed up) out before reinstalling/reformatting etc.?

Any help would be greatfull!!

Sounds not to good, you might be able to shutdown computer
on restarting tap F8 key,try enter in safe mode, then
enter in ADM user, retrieve documents. If you cant get
that far, enter recovery in xp cd,youll need to type:
COPY /? or COPY then type:HELP You can retrieve
text files
