XP/Pro OEM Install Errors - SXS.DLL, DXMRTP.MAN

Hello ...

Like several other people, during reformatting and a clean install of XP/Pro
OEM from CD on an IBM 300GL, the installation stalled with the following
error messages.

Upon clicking OK, it would attempt to reboot into Windows setup and continue
at the same point, never getting any further. And yes, the CD was wiped clean
with a soft cloth:

Error: SXS.DLL - Syntax error in manifest or policy file
D:\I386\asms\52\MSFT\WINDOWS\NET\DXMRTP\DXMRTP.MAN on line 5

Error:
Installation failed D:\I386\asms Error Message: Incorrect function

Fatal Error
One of the components that Windows needed to continue setp could not be
installed.

Incorrect function.
