About 3 weeks ago, I shut down both of my PC's since I was going away for the
weekend. When I started them back up 1 PC was ok, and the other one says
that, "This copy of Windows must be activated before you can log on. Do you
want to activate Windows now?". When I click yes, it just hangs there. I
tried going into safe mode and I just get a black screen with the words "Safe
Mode" in the 4 corners and cannot click on anything. I tried booting with
the CD in to repair and when I type "R" for repair it does nothing. I put
the CD into my other PC and have no problem Exploring it. I cannot see the
other PC in my network either. I would really like to be able to restore to
about 1 month ago. I would like to get into the PC to copy a few things I
need for work in case I have to format the HD. I have had XP for at least 1
year and I did purchase 2 licenses and haven't had a problem updating. Both
PC's have been validated by Microsoft.

Try booting to "Last known good configuration". Bring up the Startup
menu the same as you did for starting in Safe Mode but choose the
"last known good..." option instead of Safe Mode.

If that doesn't work then post a response back here and we will move
to the next step.

Good luck

Ron,

Same activation error code. However, I do get to the default Windows
desktop screen. (green grass, blue/cloudy sky) but no icons or start menu.
I tried the ctrl/alt/delete to access tack manager but nothing. There is a
normal curser but no hourglass to indicate that anything is loading/working.

It looks like it may be necessary to do a "Repair Install" of your
Windows XP. The Repair Install will preserve your installed
applications, user data files, and configuration settings. Windows
Updates will have to be reinstalled.

See http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for detailed
instructions.

Note that if your Windows XP CD is the Original Release or Service
Pack 1 version of Windows XP and if your installed XP has been updated
to Service Pack 2 you will receive an error message when you attempt
the Repair Install. If this happens then you need to create a new
installation CD that has Service Pack 2 slipstreamed into it. This
requires a functioning computer with a CD or DVD writer drive. See

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html

for details on how to do this.

Good luck
