If I upgrade my cpu in a system using windows xp
professional or other windows xp versions will I losethe
ability to use the operating system and what actions do I
have to take if any to use the operating system?

Probably no problem as long as all other hardware stays the
same. If you change other components, you might need to do
a repair install and reactivate, if it has been more than
120 since you activated, this will proceed normally on-line.

If you are only changing the processor (of course you will make sure
your motherboard can support it), then it will make no difference to
your operating system. If you change the entire motherboard and are
using XP, you will probably need to do a repair install.

Provided you have not made a lot of other hardware changes and thus make
it necessary to reactivate (which at worst is only a minor hassle), then
you just plug in the new CPU, make sure that the BIOS is happy with it
(you may need to change motherboard jumpers or BIOS settings to match
the new speed - check this before purchase) and boot XP,
