I bought a non distribution version of WinXP Pro version 2002 (back in 2002)
through Purdue (as a student), why can't I swap my 32 bit version for the 64
bit version?

Because it doesn't meet the criteria to qualify for Microsoft's
exchange program.

Thanks for the redirect, and I've already read this page which says if you
built your own system to follow the link on the right, which takes you to a
page that says you have to have ordered a complete system "between March 31,
2003 and July 31, 2005 with Microsoft Windows® XP Pro (32 Bit) preinstalled."
Kind of contradictory.

I just want to know why older purchases of XP Pro are not valid for this
exchange program.

Yeah, I just hate having to shell out money for OS. (Games and hardware I
have no problem with, for some reason. ;-) ) Just a personal problem I need
to get over I guess.

PS I like the quote Bruce

I built my machine from parts purchased thru Newwegg in march 2004, which
also included an oem version of XP Pro. SISoft Sandra shows my operating
system as XP Pro 2002.This must be the reason I can't upgrade. Doesn't seem
fair.
