Norton Utilities shows that my recent installation of the
upgrade to Windows XP Professional has "missing Microsoft
shared files". The NU cannot "repair" the problem. I am
a single user and the machine I use is not on a
network. So do I have a problem here that needs
reinstallation of XP ? Will these missing files cause a
crash or a corruption later on?

Paul, try a System File Check. Go to Start>Run type: sfc /scannow
Have the WinXP CD in the cdrom drive.
