Windows root missing

I went to boot up my laptop today, but got a message that said

"The following file is either missing or corrupt:

<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Please reinstall a copy of this file"

So I have a Windows XP disc from my mom's desktop, but her's is Home Edition
and I think my laptop is Professional. I've put the disk into my laptop and
gotten to the repair center or whatever it's called, and I have a list of
commands that I can type in to indicate what I want to fix. But if I try to
type in SYSTEMROOT for the repair, which is what makes sense to me, it
doesn't do anything. Help please! I could just reformat and be done with it,
but I have a lot of files that I need off of the computer.

You can probably copy it from c:\i386 to c:\windows\sys32.

Use %systemroot% not systemroot.

%systemroot% is an environment variable that is the location of the Windows
root folder.

%systemroot% is typically C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT.

Ntoskrnl.exe is missing or damaged, see these...

Err...how would I go about copying it? Should I copy the file from my mom's
comp to a flash drive and then try to install it on my laptop? Or is there
another way?
