Windows XP Home will not boot

My H-P Laptop will not boot in Windows XP. I am running
Windows XP Home. This happened all of a sudden after
shutting down and then rebooting. I got a black screen
and a message: "Windows could not start because the
following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows
root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe>.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi

You can put a fresh copy of ntoskrnl.exe onto your hard drive/partition:

Boot your PC with the XP CD and press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console. Then type the following at the command prompt:

expand X:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe - where X is the letter of your CD drive and C is the letter of your System drive.

Take the XP CD out and then reboot into XP. Does that work?
