hi! im john,

Sorry, cldnt find Win XP Pro group, so im postin my query here.

Well, I hav a PIII, 450 MHz, IO SE440BX2 mobo, 256 MB RAM, SIS display card.
Win XP PRO(non SP1, but hav installed 20+ SP1 Hoftix(s)).

Problem::

1) Im gettin this error after bootin process is complete:

AppName: updmgr.exe AppVer: 1.5.3.0 ModName: mfc42.dll
ModVer: 6.0.8665.0 Offset: 005bf41

how to solve?

2) The XP somtimes, doesnt shuts down, it hangs after the message "Windows is shutting down".

3) I hav d/l & installed update: [KB840374], its even showing in the Add/Remove, but when ever i start XP, after bootin it again asks to d/l KB840374.

Why?

The Hotfix list is gettin, pretty long is there anyway to shorten it or shld i remove them?

4) A question abt DX 9: I hav DX 8 installed on my PC & Thinkpad, if I install DX9::

a) Can i revert to DX8.

b) Thinkpad(R32) has ATi mobile card, will it support DX9?

I think i hav askd too much for help, please help me coz i hav tried many sites/forum, and found this forum after months.

thnx in adv! :)

It is some program that you installed that wants to update itself
automatically from the Net. You need to identify which , run the
program and tell it to stop. Its rather a popular name, but do a search
in Program Files and you will find candidates. The system itself has
wupdmgr, for Auto Update.
2) The XP somtimes, doesnt shuts down, it hangs after the message "Windows is shutting down".

Look at the extensive troubleshooter at James Eshelman's page:
specific XP section at
www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm
It will be something that is running that is not closing when told to;
it is possible to cut such things off, but I don't really advise it or
you are liable to do things like shutting down with a much modified file
in Word (say) that has not been saved, and not getting warned
3) I hav d/l & installed update: [KB840374], its even showing in the Add/Remove, but when ever i start XP, after bootin it again asks to d/l KB840374.

Update has got its records crossed. It may help to Rename the folder
windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. That will generate a new, clean
folder, and you can then delete the renamed one.

Those are there so you could *uninstall* the patches. Each corresponds
to a folder of files needed for the purpose -
Windows\$NTUninstallQnnnnnn$ for the fix described at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;nnnnnn

If you decide you will not want to uninstall a fix (and if all is
running smoothly you probably won't) then delete the folder. If you
then try in Add/remove, to Remove that one, it will fail, and you will
be offered the option of removing the entry there
4) A question abt DX 9: I hav DX 8 installed on my PC & Thinkpad, if I install DX9::

a) Can i revert to DX8.

Provided you make a Restore Point first and decide to revert to DX8 by
using it before it 'falls away' in the course of a couple of weeks or so
b) Thinkpad(R32) has ATi mobile card, will it support DX9?

Probably not; but the installation of DX9 would mean that DX9
facilities got provided by software. I think I would hold off until you
find you want to run something that demands DX9

2) The XP somtimes, doesnt shuts down, it hangs after the message "Windows is shutting down".

Could be a driver problem preventing shutdown. Close down all icons in
system tray first before shutting down to see if its one of those.

Yes, delete the uninstall folders in C:\Windows, then double click on
the entry in the Add/REmove list and it will ask you to remove the
entry but NOT uninstall the hotgox.
4) A question abt DX 9: I hav DX 8 installed on my PC & Thinkpad, if I install DX9::

a) Can i revert to DX8.

Only via a System Restore. Otherwise there is no way to revert from
DX9 to DX8.
b) Thinkpad(R32) has ATi mobile card, will it support DX9?

Yes, it may not use all the features of DX9 but it can still use it.
I think i hav askd too much for help, please help me coz i hav tried many sites/forum, and found this forum after months.
