Sounds like a virus/trojan/worm.

See if you have xcopy.com on your machine. Probably created by a virus.

If you only type xcopy without the extension and you have xcopy.com it will
execute before xcopy.exe.

Does xcopy /? work in a command prompt?

Does xcopy.exe /? work in a command prompt?

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

Hi

The syntax you are using works here alright. Have you tried running xcopy
from a command prompt?

I have 2 xcopy. One in c:\windows\system 32 ..4kb and one in
c:\windows\service pack files\i386 ..30kb
I do not have a virus scanner. This computer is never used on the internet.
I primarily use it for photography work.
Does xcopy /? work in a command prompt? No/incorrect dos version
Does xcopy.exe /? work in a command prompt? No incorrect dos version
Thanks for your help Boy this is a good one !! I have another computer
running WinMe and it works perfect…Never a problem.
Oh I have sp2 not one..

I have 2 xcopy. One in c:\windows\system 32 ..4kb and one in
c:\windows\service pack files\i386 ..30kb

4kb is too small. 30kb may be Size on disk.

I have xcopy.exe ver 5.1.2600.0 27.5 KB (28,160 bytes)

System File Checker (sfc.exe) replaces screwed up system files.

Load your XP CD in your CD drive.

Start | Run | Type or paste: sfc /scannow | Click OK

If you have XP Home and it asks for your XP Pro CD, see this KB article...

You may be prompted to insert a Windows XP Professional CD when you run the
System File Checker tool in Windows XP Home Edition
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897128

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click System | Look at any Windows File Protection
entries
-----

Are you using command.com or cmd.exe?

If you're using command.com, try using cmd.exe. Type: cmd in Start | Run
instead of command.

That is the only reason I can think of for the error: Incorrect DOS version

Incorrect DOS version is not an error that you see every day in XP, since XP
does not have DOS.

Error Message:
INCORRECT DOS VERSION

Translation:
The program you’re trying to run has found a version of Command.com other
than the one it expected.

Incorrect DOS version
A DOS error message that means the command you are using belongs to another
version of DOS. Somehow an earlier or later version of a command is on your
hard disk. Commands from one DOS version often do not work in other
versions.

We do not care about Application or Security at this time, only System and
only Windows File Protection entries.

Has the xcopy.exe in system32 changed? Is it bigger than 4kb now?

I just dragged xcopy.exe from system32 to my Desktop, xcopy.exe was replaced
in less than a minute and this was in the event Viewer...
Event Type: Information
Event Source: Windows File Protection
Event Category: None
Event ID: 64002
Date: 15-Aug-06
Time: 5:46:50 PM
Description:
File replacement was attempted on the protected system file
c:\windows\system32\xcopy.exe. This file was restored to the original
version to maintain system stability. The file version of the system file is
5.1.2600.0.

I do not have a "windows file protection" in the event viewer. "System" is
only one I have that you mentioned.
xcopy32 now is showing 378 kb..also says it was modified yesterday???
Looked up the one in ServicePackFiles\i386 and it is 32.0kb
Thanks for your help

Click on System in the left hand pane and look for Windows File Protection
in the right hand pane. Double click any Windows File Protection entries to
read more.
xcopy32 now is showing 378 kb

xcopy32.exe is not an XP file. Maybe that's why you're getting the DOS
error.

I just downloaded a Windows 95 version of xcopy32.exe and it's 40.5 KB
