windows xp pro does not respond

windows xp pro does not respond fo +/- 3 minutes (!!) after an internet
session.
could someone pls advise?

How do you mean 'not respond' - no desktop icons appearing, can't open any
programs etc.?
 
no program will start for appr. 3 minutes, not even the windows task manager.
Afterwards all commands are executed so for example when I try to start ms
word and it does not respond than I try to start the task manager it does not
start either but after 3 minutes both applications are on the screen.

Seems as though Windows is not releasing an app. still using CPU time. When
you are using the Internet how much CPU time is Internet Explorer using?
