Can not open folders on C drive

When I open My Computor and then open my C Drive, I can not open the file
folders on the drive. If, for example, I try to open Documents and Settings,
I first get a message that the program is not responding the after a minute
or so, I get another message tha "Windows Live ID Service could not be found
or did not respond" along with a choice to "Try Again" or "Close". If I click
"Try Again" the folder will open. I have never had Windows Live running until
I signed up for the newsgroup today and this problem started about a month
ago. At the same time this started I also lost some but not all of my Outlook
Express mail folders including my in box and sent folders. I am running XP
Pro with SP3. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

For the OE folders, they sometimes get moved into other OE folders during
the compacting operation. Try clicking on Local Folders in OE to see if
this is what occurred.

Are there any other Warning or Error reports in the System or
Application logs in Event Viewer during the last 48 hours?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

The most likely explanation for loss of systemic mail folders like the
inbox.dbx and sent items is interruption of the automatic compacting.
The contents may still be recoverable. I do not buy Ron's explanation.

Hope this helps.

This started a month ago?

Here is an article:

A quick search hints that just running:

msiexec /regserver

....does the trick for some people regarding your first error message.
Not sure if a reboot is required so reboot anyway so it will never
become a question.
