Lately on both startup and shutdown Windows has been inserting a dialog box
in the procedure such that either operation is stopped until I take some sort
of action.
Startup asks for a password ( I have not entered one) but will continue
after use of the enter key. Shutdown asks "what do you want the computer to
do?" Select and click OK. I find this annoying and would like to remove it
and return to the way it previously was but I have no idea where to look or
what to look for. Any help in removing this pest would be appreciated.

Is "Welcome Screen" enabled?

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
Click Change the way users log on or off.
If it is not already selected, click to select the Use the Welcome screen check box.

This should fix both the problems you described.

Note that if your system is connected to a domain, then Welcome Screen will be unavailable.

Logon/off options "grayed out" "Client services disabled" Uninstall client
services netware.

BINGO! Thanx for your help. We're back to normal.
