Windows XP printer problems

I am in the process of installing a printer on a windows XP machine.
Its a brand new lexmark printer. I am installing it through my USB
port. The driver installation seems to run smotthly but there is an
error msg informing me that the printer driver is not installed. The
physical connection seems fine because the installer detects the
printer as an unknown device. If I am in the control panel -printers,
I see the printer but trying to print a test page fails. I am not able
to add a new port either. I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling,
rebooting and have run out of ideas. Any suggestions would be highly
appreciated

This message sounds like you connected the printer before you installed the
printer driver. If so, then you should disconnect the printer and remove
the software.

Then, install the software before you connect the printer.
Once the install finishes, you can connect the printer.

The problem is that having the printer connected without the special driver
causes XP to load a generic driver which will not work with most printers.

Once try like this

On the computer. Do not give supply to printer. Now connect the
printer USB cable to USB port of the computer. Now give power supply
to printer. Then computer will detect the printer and on the screen it
will display "found new hardware wizard". You will find three options
on the screen. Choose last option "no,not this time",and click next.
Then put the printer cd in drive and select "install from a list or
specific location(advanced)" option and click next. On the screen
select "search removable media(floppy,cd)"then click next. Then it
will install the printer driver.

One other thing I've noticed, especially with Lexmark drivers, is that they
will look on the wrong port, LPT1, for the printer rather than the USB.
