While using my desktop loaded with Windows XP and other MS s/w, my wife
received a message stating that an error occurred with Windows and needed to
shut down. I tried to walk her through getting back in, but after a re-boot,
she had difficulty logging in to Windows. I told her to shut down the
computer and I would look at it when I got home. When trying to boot up, it
states that it is trying to locate the boot registry on IDE 0, my master
drive. I attempted to boot up using my XP CD, and it asks me if I want to
install XP as if it is a fresh install. I have a 60 gig HD and it is showing
58+ gig free, implying there is nothing on the drive. I do leave the
computer on for extended periods of time, but am very careful to not open up
e-mails and share files from unknown origin. I do have Zone Alarm loaded and
run ad ware fairly regularly. I am fairly computer savvy, but am stumped on
this one so far. I don't want to re-install XP yet until I know what may be
wrong. My first inclination is a virus, but am unaware as to how I may have
received it. I have a considerable amount of files on the h/d including
digital photos, so I want to be careful about any re-formatting issues to get
it up and running.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
