I have a hard drive of 40 GB but it is using less than half. I previously
used it for another operating system but now I want it all for Windows XP.

What do I need to do?

Use WinXP's native disk manager to delete the "New Volume" partition,
and then use a 3rd party partitioning utility to resize your C: (System
Volume) to take up the now unallocated space.

I do not know how to use that program. I am willing to reinstall Windows XP
so long as it uses all of my hard drive.

So, you're saying you only want one partition, the C: drive like you
always have had? If so, format the disk and install XP, preferably in
NTFS, not FAT32.

Good luck.

No need to reinstall. Download the BootIt NG setup file. You can create a bootable CD or floppy (for CD you'll need to use CD burning software to burn the ISO file to disc). Boot with the floppy or CD and when the BootIt installation starts click Cancel. You'll automatically be taken to Maintenance mode. Choose Partition work and you can delete the offending partition and resize the partition with XP installed. Couldn't be easier.
