Have you set up any files or folders on each machine and made them shared?

Very simply:

1. Both machines need unique computer names.
2. Both machines need to be in the same workgroup and on the same subnet
(i.e., 192.168.1.xxx).
3. Both machines need to have resources shared out.
4. Make identical user accounts and passwords on each machine.

You can get help with networking by looking in XP's Help & Support. Here
are some links to very good sites:

ok, if i start from the very begining it might help as i still can not seem
to get this to work or even understand this.

i have connected both pc directly together with one cable, a cross-over
cable. (as i tried another gray cable that did not work)

i have then set up a network with the setup network in the network
connections folder.

i then used the floppy disk created by my pc that is always conncted to the
internet and inserted it into the laptop, (the second pc) and run the
programme on it, and this added a new icon in the internet connections
folder that allows connection to the 'newconnection' network and i now have
internet access on the laptop.

i have created a new folder on my desktop (the first pc that is the host?)
and called it 'shared' and right clicked it and entered the properties and
allowed folder to be shared on the network, and entered the name of the
network, (newconnection) but how do i then view these files on the laptop?

thanks

You have created a peer-to-peer network and are using Windows Internet
Connection Sharing. Use My Network Places to find your other computer
and the shared folder. You can then make a shortcut to the folder if
you like.

Again, use Windows XP Help & Support to learn about networking and the
links that I gave you. Or have a knowledgeable friend come over and
help if you are still having problems.

Good luck,

Malke
