Windows XP networking not working

Here's my setup. My main machine is my desktop which I have hooked up
to a router. The desktop is running Windows ME, I have Trend Micro's
Internet Security running, and I setup internet connection sharing.

Then on my laptop, I have Windows XP running. I created a new
connection, and the LAN status says that everything is connected just
fine. In fact, I can access files on the laptop from my desktop, so I
know that something's working properly.

However, the problem is in accessing files on the desktop from the
laptop. That, and I cannot get onto the internet from this laptop.
Any thoughts on where to begin troubleshooting this?

If you have a router - why do you have internet connection sharing?

Just connect both machines to the router.
Make sure both firewalls have settings to allow machines on your network
(private subnet) to do 'File and Printer Sharing' and go from there.
