Windows XP Media Troubles (Repost)

I was running Windows, doing the normal things, chatting
on Messenger, listening to music, and the computer
crashed. I restarted, and found out that I could no
longer watch videos, start the WMP8, or view .PNG files.
After a while of searching, I found that two of my system
files were missing, and I downloaded them, and put them
in the right place, and I could watch videos again. I
still have the same problems with WMP8, and no .PNG
files, so I kept looking. It was suggested that I
download a codec pack. I did, installed it, nothing much,
except I could play WMV files on Winamp. I upgraded to
WMP9, which I now EXTREMELY regret, as I can no longer
restore to the point of which I installed it, and there
is NO uninstaller. Now I can start WMP9, but if I play
anything, it freezes at "Opening Media". And has me send
an error report and terminates the program. So now I'm
stuck with the following things: I have WMP9, and I want
WMP8 back, I have no way of seeing any .PNG files, and I
have a serious headache from asking around on the
internet and searching the knowledge database. I suspect
more system files to be missing, I just have no idea
whatsoever to which ones. Also, I am running a Hewelett
Packard Pavillion 531w, with a corrupted restore
partition so I can not do a full system recovery. I have
also done MANY virus scans, and never come up with
anything.

Yes I have, and all that does is "Remove Access" but it
takes away no or too little space, so it's not physically
removing Media Player. Thank you for trying though.

You could try System File Check.
Insert XP cd. Once set-up screen starts click on EXIT.
Then goto START-RUN and type in "sfc /scannow" and OK.
Do Not type the "" and the space between sfc and / is important.
