Windows XP Login Screen

Okay, I have a Compaq 2545 Series laptop for my PC that I
bought approximately 2 months ago. It came with Windows
XP Home Edition pre-installed.

It worked beautifully up until three days ago, when I
installed some Automatic Updates recommended by Microsoft
(because that annoying pop-up kept coming up on my
screen). The updates included a security leak patch, and
drivers for video and Dirext-X 9.

I then defragmented my hard drive, as it was getting
clutterred by that point.

I logged out of Windows XP normally and without any
problems, and my laptop shut down without any problems.

The next day, however, it started to deviate from its
normal operation. Now I can't get past the login screen
that appears with Windows XP right before it begins to
load the desktop. All that appears on the screen is the
screen itself. There are no icons for user accounts, and
no buttons whatsoever. I can move the mouse about the
screen freely, but there are no functions to use or click
on on the screen itself. It is simply a Windows XP screen
with nothing to do.

I'm wondering if I'm just stupid and I'm supposed to do
something, or if something went wrong with the updates,
ect. I tried doing F8 and loading windows from the
previous state that worked, and in safe mode, and with
command prompt and all of that, but it all takes me to
that deadly blank screen.
