Windows XP locking up

I have a new Gateway 700Gr running Xp with SP2
Several times the computer lock up but I can move mouse and right click and
some menu items but nothing opens and I will not shut down. It will but it
may take a half an hour or more

Any Ideas?
 
To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW
