XP Pro (sp2) locking up!!!

Hi

My XP Pro is locking up. Computer boots up fine and desktop loads ok.
However after about a minute, whole screen locks and no windows or programs
will open, mouse stills moves, clock stops. I have reinstalled XP and
repaired, but no joy. Everything was fine until last week. I think it might
be a virus, but I can't even get the anti-virus program to run. Can anyone
help?

seems that most people
attribute virus's as the
cause of poor performance.

however, it could be a
multitude of things and
attributed to the user or
it could be poor performance
of hardware or lack of file
/ disk maintenance.

for example when you reinstalled
windows and nothing more
the computer began to
lock up, then it is likely
an issue regarding hardware.

what you might want to
do is to check if windows
is functional in the safemodes.

As suggested select Safe Mode - if operation Ok - a driver is at fault.
BTW - have you considered System Restore?

How much RAM?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Check the System log of Event Viewer for Error Reports.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System log in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or
Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hi all

thsnks for the advice.

RAM is 2GB.

Trouble is, I can't even get the task manager up or system restore or
anything like that to start. When I click on the start button, the pane
appears, but as soon I click on anything the whole system just stops, other
then mouse will still move, but nothing will react, it just freezes
completely.

Thanks

Can you access Safe Mode? keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and
select option - Safe Mode?

What is the Report on the problem in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.
