AVG free anti-virus causes XP to lock up

howdy - as subject says, for some oddball reason, the AVG anti virus, free
edition, makes PC running XP lock up after running the program - scanning the
drive - after about 1 1/2 minutes. Every time. Here's the really odd part. I
can remove the Net card and no problem. I have tried a new net card. Same
thing. If net card is in the machine - scanning locks the PC. It's the June
07 edition of AVG free. AND it's a new install of XP. If I don't run the scan
on AVG, the PC will run just fine. Perhaps some other 'free' anti-virus
program needs to be tried? Dont' know of any.. Doesn't make sense to me. Any
Ideas??
-Gracias !

You could post this to AVG Forum:
http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/index.php?0

Or uninstall completely. A good uninstall tool is available from:
http://www.revouninstaller.com/

And try:
Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic
http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html

Good luck :)

Try Avast ( free and free registration ) , it will also alert you (
sound ) to anything happening .

Avast! includes a bootscan which can check for malware before the
problem programs get control. You can schedule a bootscan during the
initial install, or through its control panel menu. It's a bit hard to
get to; you run the antivirus program, and after the memory scan, a
control panel is displayed. Click the Menu button on the upper-right,
click "Schedule Boot-time scan".

Some other software might have this feature, but AVG and McAfee don't.

Thanks for all the replies.
It turns out that the problem with PC locking up was the network card itself.
after consulting a local computer company, they suggested re-loading XP
WITHOUT the network card in the machine. Then when XP is loaded and it's
settled down, THEN install the network card. That did the trick. PC runs just
fine and can run AVG - or AVAST doesn't cause a lockup.
Thanks again for the replies and hope this reply helps someone who might run
into problem I had.
