Keith,
AVG free doesn't have much support and hardly any relevant answers for
any problem. True you can remove it from the list, but I'm also not
sure that it will allow you to install bitdefender just because you did
that. Here's a few ideas though...
1. Download the latest AVG Free installation package from
[free.grisoft.com]
2. Run the AVG Free install file
3. Choose the Uninstall option and follow the setup wizard, when you
get to the part to remove user settings, select it.
4. Restart your computer then...
Or...
Radical install Please note DO NOT USE
the previous AVG7Free installation that you had, this must be a new
Installation file.
1. Download the Latest Version of AVG7FREE, save to a folder on your C:
drive.
...............Don't forget where you put it...............
Now run in Safe Mode. That way only the basic stuff will load and you
should find it easier to uninstall and install.
Follow these instructions to uninstall AVG and install the new version
2.Navigate to where you saved the AVG7Free Installation file that you
just downloaded.
3. Click on the AVG7Free Installation file
............At the welcome dialog box Click Next
............Click to Accept the License
............on the Acceptance notice, Click Accept
on the next dialog box AVG will Check the system status
Next you will see a dialog box with 3 options
............Select Uninstall product and Click Next
............When prompted, Select Remove user settings
............Select Include objects in Virus Vault
............Click Yes
............Click Ok
............Restart computer
4. ...Please Check to see if these exist,
A. ... Navigate to C:\Program Files\and highlight the folder named
Grisoft and hit the delete key.
B. ...In Windows XP Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data and highlight the folder's named Grisoft, and
AVG7 and hit the delete key you may find that there is only one folder
and not two.
5. Reboot your computer into Normal Mode. This is to update the
registry in the computer.
6. Go to where you saved the AVG7Free Installation file that you
downloaded and click to install.
......At the Select Installation Type, Select Standard Installation.
7. Click the Next button to continue with the installation process.
.....The installation process is finalized when you get to the
Installation complete window. Click OK to complete the AVG Free Edition
installation process.
when asked to reboot say yes.

Or try...
If it's a permission problem, here's how to reset the permissions in
the registry and all files on your %systemdrive%
Download SubInAcl: (
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displayLang=enand
) run the .msi file to extract it to a folder on your hard drive.
Then copy/paste these commands into a file called reset.cmd (create it
in the same directory that you extracted subinacl.exe to)
Quote:
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f
then run reset.cmd
