Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?
A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/en-us

Can you please post a complete copy of the Stop Error report?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure.
Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

Hope this helps.

Background information on Stop Error message 0x8E
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms794023.aspx

0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler
didn't catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues
(which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade).

What is on the line below the line above?

Are there important data files not backed up you need to recover. If yes
you need to do that first.

Disconnect every hardware peripheral, except keyboard. mouse and
monitor. Try another Safe Mode option.-Enable VGA mode.

What is the computer make and model? When was the computer purchased
new?

What do you have by way of a Windows XP CD?

What are the anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements on the computer?

Do you have access to a second computer? Is it a desktop or a laptop?
What is the make and model?

This link is to the Owners Manual for your Dell Dimension 8300
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8300/en/om/M2972A02.pdf

You remove the hard disk from the computer and put it in an external
cradle linked to your laptop computer. Often you can then read / access
the drive. This one way to recover data. The alternative is to give the
task to a small computer repair shop.

Stop 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xA996E9398,0xA8A43174, 0x0000000)
What is on the line below the line above?

After you have recovered your data reinstalling Windows XP may be the
simplest solution. What changes, if any, did you make to hardware and /
or software immediately before the problems started?

Machine went down on Sunday 1/4/09. On 12/24/08 we updated (on line) the
wireless router (dlink). In november I installed a new dvd drive. I have
disconected the dvd drive to see if that was the problem. still doesn't boot
properly.

Thanks for your help.
