Windows XP license legal question

I know. I tried it on a Windows 2000 system but I must admit that on
the same exact system (an old 400MHz laptop) WMP work much better.

But you use XP now....and real player has evolved...
Last time I tried Real Player, it relied on the presense of WMP (DLLs
and codecs) in the system. Obviously in a Linux system they don't
exist.

Sounds reasonable but illogical. The Linux version should offer WMA and WMV
support, or they shouldn't offer it.

Knoppix is a Live Linux CD based on Debian GNU/Linux, "PE" is just another
name for "bootable CD"
Knoppix PE (Pre-installed Environment) is knoppix live and like Bart PE, win
PE, Microsoft Windows XP Embedded.
Good luck to you.

Clearly proving what I said originally

You don't seem to grasp the difference between a CPU and a computer,
despite having copied and pasted a non-technical, vastly
over-simplified, and factually *wrong* definition.

How can it be wrong when he quoted the eula? So you think the eula is a
"non-technical, vastly over-simplified, and factually *wrong* definition"?
No, but go ahead and rationalize your desire to pirate software any
way you like.

You contradict yourself. You yourself have posted that it needs to be
decided in a court of law for personal, non-commercial use and it has
not ever been taken to court.

Be careful here Bruce, everytime you open your mouth, you shove your
foot deeper and deeper inside it. Soon you may well be sh*ting it then
trying to shove it back down your maw.

A Windows XP license can only be used on one (1)
computer. A second installation requires a second
license.

From the Windows XP EULA:

1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access,
display and run one copy of the Software on a single
computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other
device ("Workstation Computer"). The Software may not
be used by more than two (2) processors at any one
time on any single Workstation Computer.

Please read your End-User License Agreement by going
to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter. Then
click on "End-User License Agreement".

Oh, and here comes the very MVP who already shat out his foot from
sticking it so deep down his maw so many times. So how many times have
you stuck your foot in your mouth and shat it out in these groups now,
Carey?

Ok I'll give you that, I thought i read somewhere "installation of one OS
on
one machine and one copy for a portable machine" but I can't remember
where I
found that EULA. I'll pretend it didnt exist.

It does, but for MS Office, not an OS.

so, can you point me to it (a URL would be super). I would LOVE to have
one.

If you have a Windows licence then you can download and install the Windows
media codecs in Linux. They install in the system rather than as individual
apps so that EVERY media player in Linux (and most distros give you two or
three AT LEAST) will play wma, mp3, etc etc etc files with no problems.

There is another way, an open source, free-multi platform (yes even Linux)
office suite called "openoffice" by SUN microsystems. Its not pretty nor
something NASA would use but it works and its free.

That's not a particularly good description of the current pen Office
version - 2.02. It's every bit as good (IMHO) as MS Office 2002......

That is exactly my impression - especially in light of the ridiculous
solution provided by MS for the latest security threat found in MS
Office:

------- OPEN QUOTE -------
Guidelines for Office Documents in SAFE MODE

· Do not open Word files that are embedded in other applications,
such as Excel, PowerPoint and others.

· Home users - Even after applying the workarounds do not open Word
files directly from ANY mail clients for example, Outlook or Hotmail by
double-clicking them. Save your word document to a disk or onto your
desktop and use the "Word Safe Mode" Shortcut.

· Enterprise users - Even after applying the workarounds do not open
Word files directly from mail clients other than Outlook, for example
hotmail by double-clicking them.

· Do not open .doc from a web site via Internet Explorer or any other
browser.

· If you do not see "Safe Mode" in Word title bar you are not
running Word in safe mode. Do not attempt to open any word files as you
may be vulnerable to the malicious .doc files.

· You can use Word Viewer 2003 to open any files without being
affected by this vulnerability.
------- CLOSE QUOTE -------

In short, MS is suggesting to *not* use the same features that
allegedly make it better than OpenOffice. What a joke.

My question is simple: Do I need another license for that? Please note
that it will be running on the same exact piece of hardware
(concurrently).

1. If the virtual PC is considered part of the host PC, then you can't
install XP again as the license says you may only run only one copy of the
software.

2. If the virtual PC is considered its own computer and separate from the
host PC, then you can't install XP again because the license says you can
only install it on a single computer computer.

Depending on why you want to run this virtual PC, you might look at
downloading the evaluation version of XP. It runs for 180 days or something
like that.

Even if you went ahead and tried to install it you would run into
authentication and update issues because the registration for the host PC
and virtual PC would be different and you could wind up invalidating your
original install. This happened to someone I know and I had to help them fix
it. I tested it myself and found this with the OEM version. Can't speak for
the retail version though.

Dude, just buy a MAC next time. You could add Virtual PC to the computer to
have windows running along with Mac OSX (only the new ones I think) and
switch OS's at the click of a button.

the first url is kinda old...(2005) but the second one is better, but still
old (as updates, patches and new code comes out constantly) but don't be
discouraged. You can play WMA on a linux box but you need to figure it out.

I googled 'WMA support for linux' and got some hits, try looking for
open source codes and find a linux forum to better suite your player needs.
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=wma+support+for+linux&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

check out this one, half way down...

Brandon, I never claimed that the legal world is logical.

I hear that. I meant that players offer wma support for linux so you should
be able to use WMP file ext.'s in linux. If you own - sorry - are 'licensed'
to use Windows XP then you have rights to use their codecs.

If you feel so inclined you could find out what drivers (and their folder
trees) and what processes WMP uses and try to create your own linux WMP
player, if you are a hobbyist. Sorry I can't really offer you help for linux
issues, I don't even know why people use i... although to be fair I do use
Opera.

Hey Gordon...did you know your name is a slang adjective for stupid? We are
talking about OPERATING SYSTEMS. end message. stop.

Hey..uhh Gord...I uh..use Opera so the posts get scrambled sometimes and
....uh ...maybe I was a bit harsh.

I haven't used open office much and I'm not sure how far 'good' goes with
it's coding (yes it does read .DOC's but the GUI and advanced features are
not as easy as office 2003. But I'd still reccommend it as a great resource
(rather than pay $$$$ to save a bloated beached whale that sends spy sonar
back to its school o' fish).

I love open source and will always contribute to it but open source is an
attempt at controlled anarchy and will never mesh as nicely as the store
bought thing. Sorry but thats what I think. I admire the little guy but have
respect for quality and control.
