I am running Windows XP Pro, and am fully up-to-date with updates. When I
switch on, I reach the blue log-in screen, but unless I click the log-in icon
within 20 secs, the computer restarts. If I click the icon, everything is
fine. Anyone any ideas?

Use System Restore to return the PC to the condition it
was in a few days before this problem started.

Open Control Panek - System - Advanced and click on the Settings
button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom) section. In the Startup
and Recovery window click on the checkbox for "automatically restart"
to clear it then click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.

Now when you leave the computer at the login screen for more than 20
seconds you may receive a "Blue Screen Of Death" STOP error message.
If that does happen then the contents of the message, including the
STOP code, all 4 parameters associated with it, and any file or module
names mentioned will be a direct clue as to the underlying cause of
the problem. Post that information back here and we will try to
pinpoint the actual culprit.

Good luck
