computer guy to change it, the windows xp software he gave me was pirated. so
i bought an updated version of windows xp home edition. but when i tried to
install it. it said "setup cannot upgrade your current installation to
windows xp. your current installation of windows is not a supported path.
setup cannot continue...."
and i've tried several times to get it to install it so i can remove the
pirated copy. but it wont let me! what should i do? i paid alot for this!

There is nothing called pirated software if it is already activated and you can use it without getting the M$'s usual message that you have xxx days left for this software to run on your computer. this is the normal message you get when M$ wants to extort more money from ordinary people like you who knows nothing about computers. It is wrong for you to accuse PC ressellor of piracy when they are trying to help you. You must have bought a second hand PC because Windows ME was last released in 2000 and you can't buy it from stores.

If there is no problem with your system then just keep your upgrade version in a safe place for future install or when you buy your next PC in 100 years time.

Hope this helps.

I use non Microsoft products wherever possible which requires no activation.

I use Netscape 7.2 as my default browser which has everything I need for my work.

You can't go cleanly from XP Pro to XP Home. You'll have to format the drive
to install Home, and since you bought the upgrade, you'll need to have a
qualifying product to verify the installation.

Well OK in that case I apologise for my misunderstanding.

Now let us solve your immediate problem.

Have you got any CDs or disks for Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows NT, Windows ME or Windows 2000 professional? When you installed Windows XP home edition (the "PIRATED VERSION") was it done as an upgrade or a clean install?

If it was done as an upgrade then you can uninstall it and get back to Windows ME. Then you can install your "Legal" version of Windows XP home edition. If you did a clean install (i.e. reformat the disks etc) and assuming you don't have any CDs then you will need to buy a full version of the operaing system. If this is the case then I suggest consoder buying XP professional ($50 extra) which has more features and very secure once you have installed SP2. SP2 will protect you from external attacks. Also, the best place to buy software is Amazon which are generally competitivly priced and very reliable in terms of customer service and returns of products.

There is just another way to try and that is to change the registry key. I suggest read this/these articles:

Hope this helps but if you have any further queries then please do not hesitate to post on this Newsgroup. I don't reply to personal emails; Security reasons!

Best regards,
PS: I've always known it. Too much salt is bad for your heart.!!
