Windows XP Installation Hangs/Freezes

I am installing Windows XP w/SP2 on a PC. I used fdisk to delete the
existing partition and created a new one. I formatted the new partition to
NTFS using XP setup.

Through this whole process and currently when XP setup tries to install
setup files to complete the installation on the hard drive it hangs. It's
not at a particular point in the setup. It froze a few times before I got to
where XP installs the setup files. Each time I retried by restarting the PC
and starting over. It also froze when setup was installing the files at 35%
then I restarted and started over and it froze at 41%.

How can I complete installation without it freezing once again?

Download memtest86, use a working computer to create the memtest86 boot disk, and use it to test the memory in the broken computer.

If your RAM checks out OK through at least one entire pass, then start pulling any PCI cards you may have that aren't necessary, like Sound Cards and even network cards that aren't integrated into the motherboard. If none of that applies, make sure you have the latest BIOS from the mother board manufacturer.

Good Luck,

Hi,

Don't use fdisk to create the installation partition, use WinXP's setup to
create this. Use fdisk, if you please, to remove the existing parition and
leave the drive empty.

Ok, I followed your instructions, I used fdisk to remove the existing NTFS
partition.

I proceeded to let Windows XP setup take over. While creating partition,
using Windows XP setup, it again became non responsive causing me to reboot
and start over again to get setup to the point where it formats the partition
it recently created.

So as I stated in my initial post, it hangs up/freezes throughout the
Windows XP setup not just in a particular spot.

Conclusion: Your suggestion obviously isn't the solution to the problem.
But your help is greatly appreciated anyway.

F.Y.I.: The motherboard has the most recent bios and it was manufactured
only 1 year and a half ago.

Any other suggestions? Anyone?

Hi,

Then it's a hardware problem. Either something is misconfigured, or a
component is starting to fail. I would test the integrity of the hard drive,
the memory, then start swapping parts in.
